The village is named for Brigadier General Leonard Covington. He was killed in 1813 when General James Wilkinson’s army lost the Battle of Chryslers Field, across the border. Wilkinson’s troops came back to the fort here for the winter. Some of them died of cold and hunger. The British captured the fort in 1814. That’s from the 1940 WPA guide to New York.
