Did You Know?
Kiryas Joel is named for Joel Teitelbaum, the Satmar rebbe who rebuilt his Hasidic movement after World War II. His followers bought land here in the early 1970s, and 14 families arrived in the summer of 1974. The village incorporated in 1976. Teitelbaum died in 1979 and was the first person buried in its cemetery.
Kiryas Joel is also the Town of Palm Tree, which covers the same land. Palm Tree became a town on January 1, 2019, after voters approved a split from Monroe in 2017. Its name honors Teitelbaum, the family name of the Satmar rebbes. In Yiddish teitel means date and baum means tree, so the town name translates it into English.
