Did You Know?
Scarsdale takes its name from the Manor of Scarsdale, which once covered its site. Caleb Heathcote established that manor. He came from a place of the same name in Derbyshire, England. That’s from the 1940 WPA guide to New York.
Heathcote bought the land from four Native American leaders late in the 17th century, and on March 21, 1701, a royal patent made it the Manor of Scarsdale. He named it after his family’s ancestral home, Sutton Scarsdale. Scars was an old Saxon word for rocky crags, and dale meant valley.
