Did You Know?
Noah Porter of Massachusetts built the Ocracoke lighthouse in 1823, on two acres Jacob Gaskill sold to the United States for fifty dollars. Over the years it became a community center. In bad storms the townspeople gathered in the keepers' quarters on high ground until the water went down. During the Second World War, Coast Guardsmen lived in the quarters and kept a round-the-clock watch from the top of the lighthouse. That's from the National Park Service.
