The Old Log Post Office on South River Street
Franklin's oldest known building is a small log house. John Schenck opened a store in it in 1802. His younger brother, William C. Schenck, was one of the men who started Franklin. In 1805, President Thomas Jefferson made John the town's postmaster. He kept the job until 1829. His store is known as Franklin's first post office. It was one of the first four in Warren County.
Over the years, the log house got hidden. Additions and clapboards covered it at 310 South River Street. Workers took them off in October 1974. That December, the house was moved to The Commons at Fifth and River Streets. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, says an Ohio historical marker at the site.
