Hoover's factory start in 1908
The Hoover Historical Center marker tells a story that started small. In 1908, William Henry 'Boss' Hoover began making an electric suction sweeper. He used a corner of his leather goods factory in New Berlin, now North Canton. His grandparents had started a leather tanning business after arriving in 1827. The sweeper made Hoover a name known far beyond town. The marker calls it a universally-known name, and it started right here. In 1978, the company dedicated the Hoover Historical Center to tell that story. The business that began here made North Canton a name people know, and you can zoom in on the preview to find the streets around it.
