In 1897, a local banker named John Sanford Brumback left a large gift to Van Wert County. He wanted it to start a library for the whole county. Back then, no library like that existed. Ohio had no law that let a county pay for one with taxes. So in April 1898, the Ohio Legislature passed a new law. The state's historical marker calls it the beginning of the county library system in the United States. The library was built of Bedford limestone. It was dedicated in 1901. It still stands at 215 West Main Street, right in the middle of the map, and it still serves the whole county.
An old bridge off South Washington Street
Another marker tells about a small iron bridge. It was built in 1894 and crossed Town Creek at Hoghe Road for 100 years. It was made to carry heavy loads to and from the railroad tracks nearby. In 1994 it came off Hoghe Road. The county engineers fixed it up. In 1997 they moved it to the county fairgrounds on South Washington Street, south of downtown.
