A wide blue river crosses the top of the sheet, with a city's street grid on the far bank. Below it, green ridges fold into deep hollows. Small red buildings line the valley roads, and a long blue lake sits in the woods near Sulphur Springs Road.

The Susquehanna Log Boom on the West Branch
That wide river at the top is the West Branch of the Susquehanna. Long ago, it carried more than water. Each spring, log drives came down the West Branch. A company incorporated in 1846 built the Susquehanna Log Boom, a six-mile series of piers, to collect and store the logs. It helped make Williamsport the world's lumber capital before 1900.
That's how the state historical marker for the boom tells it. The marker stands along Montgomery Pike, which is printed on this map. The boom's good years didn't last forever. The flood of 1889 badly damaged it, and it declined after that.
