Llewellyn and the first coal field
Branch Township was formed from part of Norwegian Township in 1836. The 1881 History of Schuylkill County says much of it lies in the first coal field of the Schuylkill district. At first, farming and lumbering were the only work. The book says people only came in large numbers once coal mining began. Jacob Hime is named as the first settler at Llewellyn. He farmed, cut lumber and ran a small saw-mill. The first township election was held at his public house in 1837.
Willing, Shober and Bunting in 1830
In 1830, three men named Willing, Shober and Bunting put up the first frame building in the township. Those three names are still easy to find. Willing Street, Shober Street and Bunting Street are all printed on this map. The first township road ran through the south part of Llewellyn and crossed the creek. For a while there was no bridge, so people used a ford. The book also names the Sharp and Second mountains in the south. You can see long ridges running across the lower half of the sheet.
