The History of Cambria County came out in 1907, and it tells how Ferndale began. The borough was taken from Upper Yoder Township by the court. The decree was dated June 1, 1896. The book says the town was named by the Vickroy family. That family name is still printed on the map. Look for Vickroy Avenue among the red rooftops of town.
The short curve around Ferndale
The same book follows the water as it winds past the town. After a horseshoe curve, it says, there's "another short curve around Ferndale." You can see that bend on the print. A wide blue river wraps around the edge of town, and a second stream runs along the bottom of the sheet. The houses sit on the flat land in between, with the hills close behind them.
