Philip Livingston and North George Street

A state historical marker on North George Street honors Philip Livingston. He signed the Declaration of Independence for New York. From the fall of 1777 to June 1778, the Continental Congress met in York. Livingston came here as a delegate. He died in June 1778, while Congress was still meeting. The marker says his grave is about 300 feet west of where it stands. Congress left York on June 28, 1778, the same month he died.

Those months made York a capital for the young country. Congress met in the courthouse on the square at Market and George Streets. There it adopted the Articles of Confederation. North George Street, printed down the middle of this map, carries the same George Street name.
