How Oley got its name from the hills
The 1886 History of Berks County explains where the name came from. At first, the district of Oley took in only the central lands, and those lands were surrounded by hills. That's why the Indians called them Olink. The first settlers made the word Oley. It first shows up in writing in 1712, in a patent to Isaac le Turk for 300 acres. Look at the shaded hills around the edge of the map and you'll see the ring they meant.
The De Turk name also appears on Deturk Road. A state historical marker stands where Deturk Road meets Memorial Highway. It says John de Turk, Isaac's son, built the De Turk House in 1767. Hoch Road and Yoder Road are both printed on the right side of the map. Moravian School Road, Bertolet Mill Road and Clay Slate Road are all printed near the middle of the map.
