Pine Creek's early settlers used a system they called fair play. The 1883 History of Centre and Clinton Counties describes their rules as strict natural justice. It also says they'd settled on the land before it was purchased from its Native owners. Their story includes a local stand for independence.
The Tiadaghton Elm historical marker records what happened on July 4, 1776. Under the elm, settlers drew up resolves declaring independence from Britain. News of Congress's action in Philadelphia hadn't reached them yet. The marker credits the Fair Play men with leading that effort.
