Did You Know?
The college began with a talk on a snowy December evening in 1953 at the Inn at Wise, where local citizens Mary Thompson and Lois Tracy made the case for a local college. It opened in 1954 on the county poor farm with 109 full-time students, two-thirds of them Korean War veterans. Three local men who carried the plan to Charlottesville and Richmond came to be called the Three Wise Men. That's from the UVA Wise history page.
