The story of North Branford

The inventors of the Farm River

Northford is a small place on a small river, but for a few decades it was full of inventors. A 1925 history says Maltby Fowler built the first four-wheel vehicle in Connecticut, then left barrel making for buttons, with four peddlers' carts on the road. He built machines for buttons, combs, spoons, gimlets and pins, and his pin machine was sold to Waterbury when pin making began there. By 1840 the Fowler brothers were selling Northford pins, made on a machine that was in some ways better than the famous Howe machine. Thaddeus Fowler's pin works ran in the old Maltby mill until it moved to Seymour in 1860. He and his brother DeGrasse are credited with a screw machine that turned out 6,000 screws a minute.5678

Coconut dippers and Christmas cards

Around 1850 E. Chapman Maltby was making buttons, wooden spoons and water dippers in Northford, the dippers cut from coconut shells brought in from the West Indies. He found a way to dry and shred the leftover coconut meat, and Northford became the home of shredded coconut in America. About forty people worked there before the business moved to Shelton in 1880. Then the empty buildings filled with printing presses. David Stevens made popular Christmas cards there, and by 1892 card printing was one of the town's chief trades, with more card works at Totoket and North Branford village. The factory came down about 1935, but its foundations by the river are on the National Register as an archaeological site.491011

Totoket and Paug

Before there was a North Branford, the whole tract from the shore to the hills was called Totoket. Settlers from Wethersfield bought it in 1644, and as families pushed north to farm, they formed a church in the North Farms in 1725 and ordained Jonathan Merrick in 1727. Farther north, the place the Indians seem to have called Paug became Northford. Its first minister, Warham Williams, was a grandson of the Deerfield pastor carried off to Canada in 1704, and he served Northford for 38 years. Northford was proud of its schooling, and an 1888 history said no place its size in Connecticut sent more men and women into the professions. In 1831 the two parishes became one town.121314151
