Did You Know?
Buttonwillow takes its name from a native tree that stood out for centuries on the dry west side of the valley. The Yokuts called it Hahlu and held it sacred as a meeting place on a trail across the valley, and later it hosted rodeos. Miller and Lux built their ranch headquarters and store there in 1885, and the town followed. Miller and Lux hands were said to leave notes in the tree, a kind of early post office. That's from the KVPR public radio station.
