Here is a piece of Ballenger Creek history. On the Best Farm, three miles south of Frederick along today's Route 355, soldiers of the 27th Indiana found Confederate General Robert E. Lee's lost Special Order No. 191 on September 13, 1862. The captured order gave Union General George B. McClellan advance notice of Lee's movements. During the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864, Confederate artillery set up on the farm, and Union return fire burned the Best family barn. That's from the National Park Service.
