Every town has a first chapter, and Sylvanite is no exception. A gold rush along the Yaak River in 1895 brought hundreds of people and gave rise to the town of Sylvanite, named for the ore found in the area, a gold and silver telluride. A catastrophic fire in 1910 wiped out the town, but it opened the heavily timbered river bottomlands to farming. The river itself was named by the Kootenai people, and its name means arrow. That's from the Montana Historical Society.
Sylvanite is a community in Lincoln County. The Census Bureau counted 98 people here in 2020.
