G. L. Childs, born in Tehama County in 1882, bought the general store at Manton in 1915. Selling groceries, hardware and drugs, it was the only large store in eastern Tehama County, and its owner was elected county supervisor in 1926 and again in 1930. His father, Samuel M. Childs, served three years in the Civil War with the Twelfth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and the family came to California in 1880 and made its old home at Manton. That's from the 1931 History of the Sacramento Valley.
