Did You Know?
Commerce, a few miles from Robinsonville, was once a rival of Memphis for the river trade. Dick Abbay bought the land from the Chickasaw and built his first log cabin there in 1832, and by 1850 Commerce had become the seat of Tunica County. Then the river that built the town began to destroy it. The settlers built the first levees in this part of the Delta, helped by James L. Alcorn, who later became governor, but the river climbed the levees and swallowed the town. That's from the Federal Writers Project.
