Did You Know?
Old Town was once a mail route station called Mimbres, near where the Mimbres River leaves the hills and sinks into the sand. Once Deming became the railroad center, the stage route was abandoned, and when a Smithsonian archaeologist came in 1914, only a ranch house, a school house and deserted adobe homes were left. The valley's ancient people built a village on a cliff eighty feet high there, and its ruin was one of the most extensive he saw in the Deming Valley. That's from the Smithsonian Institution.
