This vintage map of Florida was created in 1951 and is titled “a pictorial chart of romantic Florida depicting its exotic wildlife, its tropical splendors of land and sea; its historic past; its vital and exciting present”. The map was created and illustrated by Dave Mink, an artist from Sebring, Florida, who provides a beautiful view of the Sunshine State as it once was including historical landmarks, legends, and stories from the past.
Cleverly combining Florida legend and history, this pictorial chart of Romantic Florida beautifully mixes the past and present. The map features scenes from Florida’s history along with drawings of fish native to Florida, rare tropical birds, reptiles and other animals. Mixing history with art, it’s a beautiful map that perfectly captures the time period in which it was created.
This was Florida before every coastline felt developed, and before the state became one of the fastest-growing places in America. It was the Florida of beach motels, fishing piers, orange groves, tropical gardens, and roadside stands. This vintage pictorial map of romantic Florida was restored by KNOWOL. Reproductions of the restored map are available here.
