Newburgh is a town in Penobscot County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, United States Geological Survey elevation data and Census Bureau files. Its atlas layout brings together Newburgh’s roads, buildings, ponds and waterways, and terrain, the town boundary and the pattern of buildings.
A store kept as it was
On Route 9, west of Newburgh’s village center, stands the Jabez Knowlton Store. Jabez Knowlton built it in 1839 in the Greek Revival style, and members of his family ran it for more than 70 years. When its last owner died suddenly in 1910, his widow closed the store and left its stock essentially intact, and the Knowltons kept up the building through the 20th century. In 1957 Amos Kimball moved it back from the road, just east of the Knowlton family cemetery. Inside, the mid-19th century store fixtures survive with their shelves of old goods, and the store is open by appointment as a museum. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
Newburgh had 1,595 people at the 2020 census. The town covers 31.03 square miles, with only 0.02 of a square mile of water. Orrin L. Miller, born in Newburgh, became a district judge in Kansas and then a U.S. congressman from that state, and Belmont A. Smith, born here in 1874, served as Maine State Treasurer from 1937 to 1943.
