Did You Know?
Green Island was once surrounded by water and known as Tibbits Island. It took that name from George Tibbits, who bought its northern part in 1796. A branch of the Mohawk River once split it from the mainland, and that channel was filled in during the 1960s to build Interstate 787.
Thomas Edison often fished off the north end of Green Island. He brought his friend Henry Ford to see it. In 1919 Ford, Edison, Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs camped there. By 1922 that land held a Ford plant making radiators and springs, run on power from the Federal Dam.
