Did You Know?
Lasting settlement began at Whitesville in 1819, after an earlier try in 1798 failed to last. Independence was formed in 1821, and historians never found why that name was picked. A railroad served Whitesville from 1896 until floods in 1935 damaged it. It was abandoned in 1936, and the area’s economy declined faster.
