East Second Street from Sweden Valley to Denton Hill
Start at Sweden Valley, in the lower left, where East Second Street meets Cherry Springs Road. Just below it, Ice Mine sits along Ice Mine Road, with Mitchell Hollow Road and Watson Road close by. Cherry Springs Road heads south from here, and the map also prints it as Coudersport-Jersey Shore Hwy. Nelson Run Road turns off it to the east. Now go back to Sweden Valley and follow East Second Street east. It winds up through the hills and past Irish Farm Road. Keep going and you'll reach Denton Hill, just right of center. Billy Lewis Road and Lyman Run Road head south and east from there, toward the Susquehannock State Forest label. Back near Sweden Valley, Brookland Road climbs the other way, up to the northeast. It crosses Marvin Hill Road and runs on to the top right, where Rooks Road and Ellis Hollow Road branch off. Sweden Hill Road runs just above it, with Neefe Road, Gibble Road and Faulstick Road off to the north. Many of the roads are named, and each small red mark is a building, so zoom in on the preview and look for yours.
Sweden's first school and the letter M
Sweden's best story is about its first school. According to an 1890 county history, the township's first schoolhouse was built on Mr. Corsaw's farm. The writer thought the first teacher was Mr. Corsaw's father. There were no picture books for children back then. The alphabet was printed on paper and pasted to a thin board with a handle. One of the teacher's sons, James, could learn every letter but M. So one day his father called him over and opened his pocketknife. He cut the M out of the board and lifted it on the tip of the blade. "James, the name of this letter is em," he said. "I want you to open your mouth and eat it." James did. Years later he told the story himself, and he said he never forgot that letter again.
The map doesn't mark the old schoolhouse. Some names from the same history do show up on it, though. In 1884, H.J. Neefe and J.W. Neefe were directors of the new Sweden Hill Cemetery Association. By 1890, J.W. Neefe kept a general store at Sweden. Look along Sweden Hill Road near the top of the sheet and you'll find Neefe Road. The Sweden Valley Methodist Church was finished in 1884, and A.G. Lyman paid half the cost. A state historical marker adds one more thing to look for. An early pack trail and wagon road ran south from Lymansville to Jersey Shore, and in 1834 a toll road was finished between the two. For many years it was a major trade route. Lymansville isn't labeled on this map, but the name Coudersport-Jersey Shore Hwy is printed south of Sweden Valley.
