How Paradise got its name in 1804
The 1883 Lancaster County history says the village became a post town in 1804. It records that Joshua Scott, who published a county map, suggested the name Paradise while standing on the turnpike and looking over the country. The township was organized in 1843, first as Pequea, before its name changed to Paradise.
The 1883 history calls Strasburg Road the oldest main road in the township and says it was laid out during William Penn's administration. It also names Cherry Hill, Black Horse, Kenneagy's and Wolf Rock roads. On this print, Cherry Hill Road and Black Horse Road meet Strasburg Road; Keneagy Hill Road and Wolfrock Road run south from it into the hills.
