If you grew up in Hermitage, or your family still lives off Jackson Street or East Highway 54, this map is for you. It's a new aerial view of Hermitage in Hickory County, Missouri, built from modern data and given a vintage look. Wide blue water curls around the east and south sides of town. Green, shaded hills fill the rest of the sheet. East Highway 54 runs across it all, with small red building shapes lined up along the way.
How Hickory County's courts began in Hermitage

Each red shape is a building, so zoom in on the preview and look for yours.
One story from the county's early days is how its courts got started. Goodspeed's 1889 history of Hickory County says the men who moved the county's business arrived in Hermitage with the records. The book guesses the papers may have been in one man's hat, held down with a bandana. Their first "seat of justice" was a tree stump. When the book was written, that stump was still standing. Judge Neihardt wrote a sketch of the county for the centennial. He thought the circuit court first met in Hermitage in the late summer of 1845. On the map, the red building shapes crowd closest together around Jackson Street, West Dallas Street and East Dallas Street.
The National Register of Historic Places also lists a home in Hermitage. It's the John Siddle Williams House, off U.S. 54, added to the list in 1980.
