Goodyear carries the name of a tire company that came here to grow cotton, and its city limits now reach 30 miles south-southeast into the Rainbow Valley. This map prints Goodyear Ballpark, Goodyear Civic Square Park, Falcon Park, Desert Edge High School and Millennium High School, with Sevenmile Mountain, Rainbow Valley and the Gila River shaping the land.
Goodyear is a city in Maricopa County, about 17 miles west of downtown Phoenix.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of Sevenmile Mountain and Rainbow Valley comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The city covers 191.334 square miles, and 95,294 people lived here at the 2020 census. In 2008 Goodyear won the All-America City Award from the National Civic League.
Cotton for tire cords
Goodyear began in 1917, when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company bought 16,000 acres here to grow cotton for the cords in its tires. During World War II the Army Air Forces built Luke Field Auxiliary #6, Goodyear Field, in 1943, and today’s Phoenix Goodyear Airport was built during the war as well. Goodyear became a town on November 19, 1946, with 151 homes and 250 apartments, a grocery store, a barber shop, a beauty shop and a gas station. It became a city in 1985, and in 1987 the remaining 10,000 acres of the original farmland were sold to Suncor Development. Most of the building and growth has come since 1990. Phoenix Goodyear Airport has an 8,500-foot runway, and airlines from around the world use it to maintain and store their planes.
From the old town center, the city limits run north 5 miles to the Glendale line and south-southeast 30 miles into the Rainbow Valley, to an area south of State Route 238. The Gila River passes through the city. South of the river, near the Estrella Mountains, lies Estrella, the largest community in Goodyear at 20,000 acres. The Estrella Mountains, or Sierra Estrella, are Komaḍk in O’odham and Vii Lyxa in Maricopa, and one of their major peaks, Hayes Peak, is named for Ira Hayes, the Marine hero of the Pima Nation. In March 1699, on his way back from the Colorado River, Father Kino climbed a pass through these mountains and saw the Río Salado and Río Verde that he drew on his maps. Estrella Mountain Regional Park covers almost 20,000 acres of the range, most of it still desert, with eight trails that add up to more than 30 miles.

Spring training and the city square
Goodyear Ballpark is the spring training home of the Cleveland Guardians and the Cincinnati Reds. It opened with a grand opening ceremony on February 21, 2009, and held its first Cactus League game four days later, on February 25. Outside the main entrance stands The Ziz, a 60-foot 6-inch fiberglass statue by the artist Donald Lipski, and the park hosts the city’s Star Spangled 4th and Fall Festival too. The Guardians came back to Arizona and the Cactus League in 2009 after 15 years away.
Goodyear’s new City Hall opened in August 2022 at 1900 North Civic Square. The complex holds a two-story library named the Georgia T. Lord Library for the late Mayor Georgia Lord, who was first elected in 2011, won a second term in 2013 and was elected to her last term in 2017, and who died in December 2021. Millennium High School opened under that name in 1999, and its Tigers girls basketball team won the state title four years in a row, from 2019 to 2022. The baseball player Josh Rojas went there. Desert Edge High School opened in August 2002 with a class of 138 freshmen. Its campus was designed as a green building to save energy and water, and it’s LEED certified. Its teams are the Scorpions, and its music students put on a yearly festival called “Edgestock.”
Falcon Park and Goodyear Civic Square Park have their places on the sheet. The streets reach from Rainbow Valley out to Estrella Camp, and Sevenmile Mountain, Rainbow Valley and the Gila River give the land its shape.
This Goodyear map is a good addition to an office, library or den, and it can help teach children the geography and history of the area. It’s made for anyone who calls Goodyear home, and KNOWOL created it in 2026 to show the city as it looks today.
