Did You Know?
Judge John S. Wheeler built the town of Wheeler at the base of Copper Mountain, the first town known in the valley. With little ore to mine, it lived on logging and lumber for the mines of Ten Mile Canyon, and it had a hotel, a general store, a post office, a stage stop by 1879 and a railroad station by 1882. Chuck Lewis was the driving force behind the ski resort, which opened in 1972. He even milled the trees cut for ski trails into the lumber that built it. That's from the Copper Mountain Resort.
