Every town has a first chapter, and Honalo is no exception. The Reverend Kaiseki Kodama came to Kona in 1914 and held services in the old Hanato Store, across the road from today's temple in Honalo. In old shoes and carrying a black umbrella, he walked around the whole island twice to collect donations for a temple. The main hall of Daifukuji Soto Mission was dedicated on May 27, 1921. The temple became the hub of the Japanese immigrant community, a place far from home to gather and pray, marry, and honor their ancestors. That's from the Daifukuji Soto Mission.
Honalo is a community in Hawaii County. The Census Bureau counted 996 people here in 2020.
