Howland is a town in Penobscot County, where the Piscataquis River meets the Penobscot River.

KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, combining modern geography with the look of a vintage atlas. United States Geological Survey elevation data shades the terrain. Census Bureau files supply the roads and municipal boundary, with buildings and waterways brought together in an aerial view.

A name from the Mayflower

Howland was settled in 1818 and named for John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower. It was incorporated as a town in 1826. The town sits on the west bank of the Penobscot River at its meeting with the Piscataquis, and had 1,094 residents at the 2020 census.

Percy Spencer and microwave cooking

Percy Spencer was born in Howland in 1894. He worked in mills as a boy and learned electrical subjects through his own study. After joining the Navy, he continued studying radio technology, mathematics and physics.

Spencer later worked at Raytheon, where his experiments developed microwave cooking. The company filed a patent application for a microwave oven in 1945. His engineering career took place beyond Howland, while his life began here in the river town.
