Lee is a town in Penobscot County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, United States Geological Survey elevation data and Census Bureau files. Its atlas layout brings together Lee’s roads, buildings, ponds and waterways, and terrain, the town boundary and the pattern of buildings.
A town and its academy
Lee incorporated in 1832. Originally called Mattekeunk, it took the name of Revolutionary War general Henry Lee after Stephen Lee proposed the change.
Lee Academy was founded in 1845 as a teacher-training school. It became a private boarding and day high school, serving local students as well as students from farther away.
The academy also developed international partnerships. In 2009, a satellite school opened in Shenzhen, China, with a principal from Orono and teachers working there.
