Leeds is a town in Androscoggin County.

KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, United States Geological Survey elevation data and Census Bureau files. Its atlas layout brings together Leeds’s roads, buildings, neighborhoods, ponds and waterways, and terrain, the town boundary and the pattern of buildings.

The Stinchfields and Leeds

Leeds was named after the English city associated with the family of Thomas and Rogers Stinchfield, early settlers here. Leeds was incorporated in 1801.

The town borders the Androscoggin River and Androscoggin Lake. The Dead River runs between those two bodies of water through Leeds.

A monument to peace

Oliver Otis Howard was born in Leeds in 1830. After his Civil War service, he led the Freedmen’s Bureau and helped found Howard University in Washington, D.C., promoting education for formerly enslaved people.

Oliver and his brother Charles Henry Howard placed a peace monument on Monument Hill in 1895. Their brother Roland Bailey Howard had wanted a memorial there to honor the peace after the Civil War. The brothers had played on the hill as children.
