Lebanon is a town in York County.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 from public survey records, United States Geological Survey elevation data and Census Bureau files. Its atlas layout brings together Lebanon’s streets, buildings, neighborhoods, ponds and waterways, and terrain, the town boundary and the pattern of buildings.
Towwoh Plantation
Lebanon was incorporated in 1767 from Towwoh Plantation. Its new name referred to the biblical land of Lebanon. Farming included hay production, and water power on the Salmon Falls River and Little River supported mills.
The town had sawmills, gristmills, a shingle mill, a wool-carding mill and a tannery. Oren B. Cheney founded West Lebanon Academy in 1850, before his work establishing Bates College in Lewiston.
Charles Coffin Jewett
Librarian Charles Coffin Jewett was born in Lebanon in 1816. He became librarian and assistant secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1848, then superintendent of the Boston Public Library in 1858.
Jewett worked toward a national catalog combining the holdings of American public libraries. He developed methods for reproducing individual catalog entries and advocated consistent cataloging rules.
