The Hunnewell Meeting of April 1861
In the spring of 1861, a big public meeting was called in Hunnewell for April 13. It came just after the firing on Fort Sumter, when the war had begun. Both sides were there to speak. G. Watts Hillias spoke for the side that wanted to leave the Union. Samuel B. Hardy, of Jackson Township, spoke for the Union. The General History of Shelby County, Missouri, printed in 1911, says the excitement that day was drawn to its utmost tension.
The war came close again that summer. On July 10, 1861, troops burned the Salt River railroad bridge, two miles west of Hunnewell. Some people in the area brought turpentine to help it burn. The bridge was soon built again. Union General John Pope made his headquarters at Hunnewell part of the time. Today a rail line still runs straight across the map, right through the grid of streets.
