How New Franklin Got Its Name

The town's name tells part of its story. The State Historical Society of Missouri keeps an old file of place names. It says the town was named New Franklin "to distinguish it from the other place which was henceforth spoken of as Old Franklin." So there was a Franklin first. Once the new town came along, folks started calling the first one Old Franklin. The newer name is the one printed in big letters across the title panel.
The Old Business Blocks on East Broadway
Two spots in town are on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Franklin Commercial Historic District covers the business blocks along East Broadway, from 101 to 136. It was listed in 2013. The Harris-Chilton-Ruble House was listed in 1980. Its address is 108 North Missouri. Both East Broadway and North Missouri Street are printed on the map, right in the middle of town.
