Sainte Genevieve, a village already 15 years old in 1764
Ste. Genevieve's story goes back a long way. In 1764, a Jesuit priest named Father Phillibert Watrin spoke about the town. He said a new village named Sainte Genevieve had started 15 years before. His count points back to about 1749. That account is kept by the State Historical Society of Missouri in its old place names file. The map prints that same spelling, Sainte Genevieve, right in the center of town.
The Bolduc and Guibourd houses on Main and Merchant
Some of the old town still stands today. The Louis Bolduc House is at 123 South Main Street. It went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. The Jacques Dubreuil Guibourd House sits at the corner of Fourth and Merchant streets. It was listed that same year. The whole Ste. Genevieve Historic District was listed even sooner, in 1966. To find these homes, look for South Main Street and the spot where Merchant Street meets Fourth Street.
