Every town has a first chapter, and Basin is no exception. Miners found gold along Cataract Creek as early as 1862, but Basin grew up in the 1880s after John Allport struck gold at the mouth of Basin Creek. In 1888 the Montana Central Railway linked the town to the smelter at Wickes, and William Nichols of Butte platted the townsite the next year. Mining investors Samuel Hauser, Marcus Daly and William A. Clark all had a hand in building Basin. That's from the Montana Historical Society.
