Did You Know?
Garwood grew in the late 1800s along the Jersey Central Railroad, between Cranford and Westfield. It was named for Samuel Garwood, president of a land company tied to the railroad. Unhappy with roads, fire protection, police and schools, residents sought their own government. The legislature made Garwood a borough in 1903, over the objections of Cranford.
