Did You Know?
New Milford is called the Birthplace of Bergen County. David Demarest Sr., a French Huguenot, made a deed with the Tappans on June 8, 1677. It gave him roughly 2000 acres east of the Hackensack River. His wife Marie died on the journey, perhaps of smallpox. She was the first burial in the French Burying Ground. That’s from the New Milford Historic Preservation Commission.
