Here is a piece of Waterflow history. Early settlers from Kentucky who homesteaded at Waterflow are said to have given it the nickname Kentucky Mesa, and a local school carried that name. When a formal name was needed for the post office, Waterflow was chosen, because the waters of three rivers, the San Juan, the Animas and the La Plata, flow through the valley. That's from the Place Names of New Mexico by Robert Julyan.

Waterflow is a community in San Juan County. The Census Bureau counted 1,554 people here in 2020.
