Lumberland grew after the Delaware and Hudson Canal opened in 1828. Canal boats carried anthracite coal from Pennsylvania mines to big city markets. Hamlets such as Pond Eddy and Mongaup grew up along the canal. Railroads later replaced it, and in the 1930s its bed became New York State Route 97.
