Howland Springs Road Southeast has a story behind its name. The Howland Springs historical marker tells how Dr. John Seely bought 85 acres in 1803. The land included mineral springs, which he turned into a health spa. It became a center for culture and recreation in the township. In 1873, the Shedd brothers built a three-story hotel south of the springs. Guests had a dance hall, a billiard room, and a bowling alley.
The hotel thrived until a fire destroyed it on June 16, 1882. After that, fewer people used the springs for recreation. The springs' story continued through the sale of their water across northeastern Ohio. The marker calls Howland Springs the township's oldest continuous business.
