Morristown was laid out in 1802. John Zane and William Chapline platted it along the old Wheeling Road. The town took its name from Duncan Morrison. He was an early settler, an innkeeper and a Justice of the Peace. That makes Morristown older than the state of Ohio itself. This history comes from the Ohio History Connection marker for the village. The marker stands where National Road meets Old National Road.
Main Street and the Old National Road
Trade on the National Road helped Morristown grow into the mid-1800s. The marker calls that road the first federally funded highway project in the United States. For years it was a main way west. As the town grew, brick and frame buildings in the Federal style took the place of the first log cabins. Many of those buildings still stand today. In 1980, Morristown was named to the National Register of Historic Places. The marker calls it a well-preserved example of a National Road town. On the map, look for the rows of red buildings along Main Street and Old National Road.
