How Morrow County won the Victory Shaft
In the summer of 1919, Ohio held a special contest across the state. People bought war savings stamps from the U.S. Treasury. The stamps helped pay for America's part in World War I. Anyone could buy them, rich or poor, young or old. They earned four percent interest, and they weren't taxed. Morrow County won the contest. As a prize, the Ohio War Savings Committee gave the county a monument called the Victory Shaft. About 10,000 people came to see it opened on December 4, 1919. Two Morrow County natives spoke that day, Ambassador William Graves Sharp and Senator Warren G. Harding. That's the story told on the Ohio historical marker that stands beside it.
The Victory Shaft is still there, in the small park on the village square near the fountain. To find the spot on the map, look where North Main Street meets West High Street. The Morrow County Courthouse and Levering Hall are close by. Both are listed on the National Register.
