How Peebles started where Zane's Trace met the railroad
Peebles grew up at a crossroads. A state historical marker at the post office tells the story. Isaiah Custer platted the town in 1881. He laid it out where Zane's Trace met the new Cincinnati and Eastern Railway. Zane's Trace was an old road, first opened in 1796 and 1797. The railroad came through the same year the town was laid out. The village was incorporated in 1886. It was named for John G. Peebles, a businessman from Portsmouth.
David Nixon built the first house in town. For many years it was run as the Nixon Hotel. Two streets on the map carry the Nixon name, North Nixon Avenue and South Nixon Avenue. Starting in 1906, Peebles held a chautauqua every year on grounds south of the railroad. They went on through 1917. Look for Chautauqua Street on the map today.
