Edward Ford's plate glass company, 1899
Rossford's best-known story is glass. Edward Ford came to the Toledo area and built his company on 173 acres on the east side of the Maumee River. In 1899 he opened the Edward Ford Plate Glass Company. Rossford sits on the Maumee River, and the wide blue river at the top of the map runs along the town's northwest side. Ford did more than make glass, too. The building's National Register nomination says he's credited with starting a Board of Education. He's also credited with starting the first school used for both lessons and religious services.
One of the company's buildings still stands at 140 Dixie Highway. It's the Employee Relations Building, and it was added to the National Register in 2016. Its first floor held offices and businesses until the 1980s. Look for Dixie Highway where it meets Superior Street near the river, at the north end of town.
