Every town has a first chapter, and Catawba is no exception. In 1887 two new railroads, the 3C's and the Greenwood, Carolina and Northern, settled how their lines would cross near Cureton's Ferry, with the GC&N passing under the 3C's. The place was soon called Catawba Junction, and a post office named Catawba opened there in February 1889 with Mrs. Sallie P. Wylie as postmaster. Later, Simpson's store at Catawba Junction held the post office and carried travelers from the Seaboard depot to Rock Hill to catch trains for Charlotte and New York. That's from the Roots and Recall history site.
