Every town has a first chapter, and Pueblo Pintado is no exception. Pueblo Pintado, an active Navajo center with a school, stores and government buildings, is named for the ancient ruins three miles to the west. When Lt. James Simpson visited the ruins in 1849, the expedition's Mexican guide, Carravahal, who probably knew more about them than anyone else, called them Pueblo Pintado, the painted town. Others in the party had their own names for the ruins, among them Pueblo de Montezuma, Pueblo Colorado, Pueblo de Ratones and Pueblo Grande. That's from The Place Names of New Mexico.
